about

“The stand-out [track on the EP] features the voice of fellow Brighton musician J-Felix… Perfect.” – MIXMAG
“A sublime journey through squelchy electro-funk, tripped-out neo soul and woozy hip-hop beats” – 8/10 – NME
“So damn good...This guy’s got it going on!” - HUEY MORGAN (BBC 6MUSIC)

Out 29th July, “The Runaway” EP is the latest release from Brighton-based producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist J-Felix on Tru Thoughts. Hot on the heels of his killer “101 Reasons” album which became a stereo favourite with Don Letts and Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music), stacked up support from MIXMAG and NME, and had tracks played on Julie Adenuga’s first Apple Beats1 radio show, this digital EP uncovers three new tracks featuring soulful vocals from label-mates Harleighblu & Abi Flynn, and a bundle of instrumentals and A Cappella’s on a woozy boogie-tip that will keep the dancefloor packed all night.

Bristol-born and Brighton-based, J-Felix aka Joe Newman has cut his teeth in an eclectic range of bands and musical projects, including touring internationally as Alice Russell’s guitarist, as well as having his work licensed to various compilations alongside the likes of DJ Vadim, Ta Ku and Opolopo (to name just a few). He also absorbed a huge array of influences - from A Tribe Called Quest to The Clash to De La Soul; Jimi Hendrix to Snarky Puppy - before deciding the time had come to zoom in on his own sound. He was right to take the plunge; stepping out under his solo moniker, J-Felix, he found his heart-on-sleeve, P-funk laced songs quickly sparking interest.

J-Felix’s latest clutch of disco-gems is heavily inspired by the music he’s been grooving to. From the golden era of 90s hip-hop to R&B, afrobeat and new disco edits aplenty, Newman’s vast taste is an ever-filling source of inspiration to dive into. “With this EP” Newman explains “I wanted to keep it soulful, jazzy and funky whilst considering a more club friendly approach”. J-Felix steers away from samples in his music, layering his own instrumental beds and calling on the fresh and original vocals of the latest divas on the scene to breathe life into them.
